Exciting news has been revealed for physical media collectors and Tombstone fans. The iconic Western has been given the 4K Ultra HD treatment with an all-new Steelbook getting released in April.
As announced on Thursday, Tombstone will ride again on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on April 22, 2025. The movie has been "meticulously remastered and restored, allowing audiences to experience every gun battle with stunning visuals and immersive sound... triggering viewers to witness all the dustups and defilement of the Wild West in crisp visual detail unlike ever before." The new 4K version of the film will also be made available on digital platforms such as Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.
The best modern westerns incorporate relevant sociopolitical and cultural content, while honoring the genre's history.
There will be bonuses for fans to also enjoy with the new release. This includes a sneak peek behind the scenes with director George P. Cosmatos, detailing how the filmmakers brought the story to life. In addition to bonus features on previously released versions of the film, the new 4K disc will include a collectible limited edition Steelbook with custom artwork and packaging.
The official synopsis for the release reads, "Every town has a story — Tombstone has a legend. Experience the explosive, action-packed battle on 4K Ultra HD. U.S. Marshall Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell), his brothers (Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton) and the outrageous Doc Holliday (Val Kilmer) band together to bring law to the lawless in a notorious showdown at the O.K. Corral. The star-studded cast also includes Dana Delany, Jason Priestley and Michael Biehn in an epic story of Wild West justice."
In Tombstone, Doc Holliday's dying words aren't meant to be taken literally. His tragic final moments have much more meaning than it seems.
Written by Kevin Jarre, Tombstone remains one of the most popular Western films ever made. Star Kurt Russell told GQ while looking back on the film that it's "undeniable" that no other film has fans quoting as much of the dialogue that's in Tombstone. He also reflected on how the movie has become so well regarded by Western fans and how happy that made him feel.
"Now it’s being considered one of the greatest Westerns ever made, so I’m happy about that," he said. "But there’s one undeniable thing. You name me another Western where you can recall as much of the dialogue as people can recall from Tombstone. It’s not even close. Much more so than any other Western. That’s undeniable. If you’re asking me if it was great working with Val Kilmer, who played Doc Holliday on Tombstone, the answer is absolutely."
The 4K Ultra HD version of Tombstone will be released on April 22. Pre-orders are not yet live but are expected to launch in the coming days.
